Student video research 2

This video shows we want to do the performance aspect. We want to have the acoustic guitar player playing in various locations. The only problem with this video is that he stops playing it half way through which looks pretty bad so we will have to remember to keep it gong throughout.

student video research

We think this video has aspects that we would like to involve in ours. The gorilla costume is exactly what we are looking for. We think the comedic effect of the costume in this video is very good and would work very well in ours.

Test Footage Quicktime

This is the test footage we did around college to try out a few of our shot ideas.

Test footage

Yesterday we went around college and took test footage of shots we are thinking about using in our video. In our video we are considering having a shot of the guitarist jumping into a pool, the shot will then be reversed so we took shots of someone jumping off a bench so we could reverse it to see it if would work and if it looked good. We also took a tracking shot which we sped up. We are also thinking of having a split screen in the video of the guitarist stepping from one location to another so we took two shots in different locations and whilst editing we made it into a split screen. During the editing process we tried a variety of techniques including; cropping and resizing frames, reversing, slowing down, speeding up etc. After trying the techniques we found out how hard they are to do and if they will work for our video.
The split screen technique was harder to do than we thought, it was hard to line up Sam's body so that it matched from one side of the screen to the other. However the end result did look good. The tracking shot was very rustic due to some interesting camerawork. The reverse shot was easiest to do and looked very effective. We used push slides for transitions, these looked fabulous and we might use them in our video.

Steal My Kisses Official Video

As you can see the official video has some of the same basic ideas as ours. For example Ben Harper sings some of the lines whilst on the move and in different locations.

Song Lyrics

i pulled into nashville, tennessee
but you wouldn't even come around to see me
and since you're headin' up to carolina
you know i'm gonna be right there behind ya

'cause i always have to steal my kisses from you
always have to steal my kisses from you

now i love to feel that warm southern rain
just to hear it fall is the sweetest sounding thing
and to see it fall on your simple country dress
it's like heaven to me i must confess

i always have to steal my kisses from you
always have to steal my kisses from you

now i've been hangin' around you for days
but when i lean in you just turn your head away
no you didn't mean that
she said i love the way you think but i hate the way you act

i always have to steal my kisses from you
always have to steal my kisses from you

Animatic Feedback

After showing our animatic to the class we received some feedback.

The first thing that was said is that it looks good and will be simple to make. Also we need to keep it a spoof and make it funny or it won't work. We need to make sure that we mess about with the conventions and bend the rules a little bit.

It was also brought up that we need to get in contact with Hamley's to get permission to film there.

We were happy with this feedback as there were a lot a positive comments and any criticism was constructive and we can think about it when making the video.

Ben Harper music video proposal

For the video we are including three main key ideas. These would be various performance pieces on an acoustic guitar and bongo drums, a more comical aspect where two people are dressed up as well as a few abstract clips.

acoustic guitar man on -
train platform
train
in town
park
someones house
toilet
pool
car park

fancy dress love -
2 people dressed up as monkeys, vegetables, clowns (change facial expressions throughout) pirates, ninjas. to fill up boring parts of song - quite comical, one proposes at end :)

abstract -
funny drawings, speed up
lyrics to song

landmarks -
in london, famous landmarks and bridges etc. toy stores, changing rooms, playing on a bridge or pavement as sun goes down, till it gets dark.

From this Ben Folds video we would like to use the shot of the man jumping into the swimming pool reversed. We also like some of the shot techniques like the extreme close ups of the guy mouthing the lyrics. We'd like to use the same kind of editing techniques such as speeding up and slowing down parts of the sequence. Although the video is very good, it has a very comical value, we would like this same comical aspect in our own video.

Again in this video we like the comical aspect. This video however differs from the Ben Folds video because it uses people dressing up to put across the comical aspect.

Artist Research

As a young man, Harper recorded the LP Pleasure and Pain with fellow Folk guitarist Tom Freund. After this limited edition record, Harper got a record deal with Virgin Records, which released his debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World (1994).

This was followed by Fight For Your Mind (1995) which became a college radio favorite and generated an abundance of songs which still fill his set list to this day.

From early on in Harper's career, his music received more attention in Europe than it did in his home country. While he was a well-known and respected figure in the United States.

In 2006, Harper released the double album Both Sides of the Gun which debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts.

Harper finished a worldwide tour in support of the album in 2006, with support from Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley on the North American leg.

Though uncredited, he appears briefly in the 2006 David Lynch film Inland Empire, alongside his wife Laura Dern.

Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals recorded a new album, Lifeline, in Paris. It was released in 2007. He also covered John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" on the benefit CD Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur.

He has become a big success in Brazil and Portugal, because of his collaboration "Boa Sorte/Good Luck" with Brazilian singer Vanessa da Mata, which peaked at #1 in the Brazilian top 100.

Harper is part of the No Nukes group which is against the expansion of nuclear power. In 2007 the group recorded a music video of a new version of the Buffalo Springfield song "For What It's Worth".

Ben Harper - Fight Outta You

This is another official Ben Harper video. Its far more stylistic than what we are aiming for but still a brilliant video.
